VIRGINIA, USA — Sen. Tim Kaine has held onto his seat in the United States Senate for Virginia, according to the Associated Press.
The race between Kaine and GOP opponent Hung Cao was called at around 11:20 p.m. by AP, and he was victorious yet again.
In October, during their only televised debate, Cao and Kaine went back and forth on several topics impacting Virginians every day, including the strike at the ports, the economy and abortion rights.
During the debate, Kaine said the port employees were entitled to wage increases and better benefits because their last contract renegotiation was six years ago in 2018.
“You’ve got to bring the terms, wages, and benefits up to where they should be circa 2024. Paying them like it’s 2018 doesn’t cut it,” Kaine said.
Kaine has served in the Senate for the last 12 years and is believed to have a "can-do" attitude, which helps bring parties from both sides of the aisle together.
When asked how he plans to move the economy forward, Kaine said “we need to continue investing in clean energy that’s affordable, continue to bring down costs on prescriptions drugs for seniors, and continue helping adults with relief from students loans.”
The senator is currently a co-chair of Career and Technical Education Caucus. This program focuses on expanding job training for students. Kaine is a former service member who works to reduce unemployment for military families and veterans.
This aligns closely with vice-presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz's efforts. Which is why it's no surprise that when Kamala Harris announced Walz as her running mate, Kaine backed the pair.
In a statement, Kaine said, "From one Tim to another — I’m so proud to support Tim Walz as the next Vice President of the United States, and I’m going to do everything I can to help send Kamala and Tim to the White House in November."
Kaine is familiar with being a vice-presidential candidate, as he was Hillary Clinton's running mate during the 2016 election.
