Woman who crashed into sheriff's deputy cruiser was allegedly drunk, driving on the wrong side of the road

The driver reportedly denied drinking, but later changed her story and told police she had “a little” bit of wine.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A woman is under arrest for driving under the influence and crashing into a sheriff’s deputy cruiser.

On April 30, Sheriff’s Deputy B.E. Vaughn, with Stafford County, was traveling on Garrisonville Road just before 10:30 p.m. when he noticed a car driving on the wrong side of the road, coming straight at him.

Deputy Vaughn turned on his sirens in an attempt to get the driver to stop, but it reportedly didn’t help. A 66-year-old woman who has not been identified at this time, collided head-on with the deputy’s cruiser. Neither were injured from the crash.

When Deputy Vaughn initially spoke with the driver, she allegedly told him that she couldn’t remember what happened or how she ended up in Stafford County. Police say she was visibly intoxicated and had the smell of alcohol on her breath.

Deputies say the driver denied drinking, but then later changed her story and told police she had “a little” bit of wine. Officials found that she had a DUI incident in Culpepper just four months prior. She is being held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond and faces charges of driving under the influence second offense within five years, reckless driving, and failure to drive on the right side of the road.
