Woman dies in Virginia house fire; damages total more than $600k

The fire was called in by a neighbor who reported seeing flames from the roof of the home.

ANNANDALE, Va. — A woman has died after a home in Annandale went up in flames on Saturday.

At 11:23 p.m. on Saturday, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a reported house fire in the 8200 block of Mockingbird Drive in the Annandale area of Fairfax County. At the scene, firefighters noticed a two-story, single-family home with heavy fire coming from the roof. Crews worked to extinguish the flames quickly.

During search and rescue operations, one woman was rescued and rushed to an area hospital for help where she later died. Investigators say the cause of her death is pending an autopsy and toxicology report from the medical examiner.

No firefighters were injured as a result of the fire. The fire was originally called in by a neighbor who reported seeing flames from the roof of the home.

Investigators say the fire was caused by a fault within the electrical lighting branch circuit related to the second-floor bathroom.

The fire caused an estimated $639,913 in damages, according to officials.
