STERLING, Va. — After spending more than a month at a burn center in D.C., volunteer Sterling Firefighter Brian Diamond is going home.
Diamond sustained serious injuries during a Feb. 16 home explosion on Silver Ridge Drive that took the life of fellow Firefighter Trevor Brown and injured 11 others. He is the last first responder injured in the explosion to be released from the hospital.
His family, and the entire Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System, welcomed him as he returned home on Wednesday.
Authorities say after Diamond was rescued from the home that exploded, he was taken to the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in critical condition with second and third-degree burns.
After multiple surgeries, Diamond was able to be released.
Members of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company and Sterling Volunteer Rescue Squad picked Firefighter Diamond up at the Burn Center Wednesday afternoon and took him back to Loudoun County. Fellow first responders from Sterling and across the County gathered at Sterling Fire Station #18 in Cascades and at Firefighter Diamond’s home to welcome him.
“Brian and his family still have a long road ahead, but we are elated that he is home with his wife and children,” said System Chief Keith H. Johnson. “The members of our fire and rescue family along with our amazing community partners will continue to support the Diamond’s along their healing journey. This is also an important milestone for our entire system to begin to heal from this tragedy.”
The deadly Sterling house explosion remains under investigation by the Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office.
