ASHBURN, Va. — Through the game of Super Smash Bros, one Virginia high school team is bringing home yet another state championship.

Freedom High School's eSports team in Loudoun County won their sixth straight State Championship for Smash Brothers Ultimate over the weekend of April 20.

Their coach Michael Albert says he started the program as a way to help high schoolers form friendships and express themselves.

"I've seen young men like Joey Dyer rise to the challenge by winning the championship single-handedly. I've seen Aidan Kruk become our 'Mr. Clutch,' winning his 1st and last championship as our anchor. Ryan Vu setting the high standard of play that we hold ourselves to. Jack Newbrough being a true leader, and William Whipp being our character expert and comedian to always keep the mood lighthearted. Caden Byerley being a humbled, pleasant young man, yet the most intimidating opponent playing arguably the cutest character: Jigglypuff," said Albert in a statement to WUSA9.

He then added, "These are only a sample of experiences and moments that I will cherish forever. When I think of sports, it has to be more than just about winning."

Albert explains the program is about personal growth and learning to show professionalism, whether you win or lose. In his statement, he praised God for giving him the chance to be a part of the team. He told WUSA9 that he plans on continuing to teach professionalism, goodness, and community.

In addition to being the eSports coach, Albert teaches special education, and algebra, and is a Jam club sponsor.
