WASHINGTON — A joyful occasion for college-bound students included a huge surprise, and that is getting us uplifted.
Tuesday was College Signing Day 2024 in D.C., a time when thousands of soon-to-be high school graduates from across the DMV come together to celebrate their next steps in their education. This day is significant for all the young people involved, whether it be a two or four year college or university, the military or a professional training program.
The event was hosted by the nonprofit DC College Access Program, which helps students prepare for, enroll, and graduate from college. The signing day event was held at Capital One Arena.
It included guest appearances by professional athletes from the Washington Wizards and Commanders, Ted Leonsis, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and more.
But perhaps the biggest surprise guest was former first lady Michelle Obama, who encouraged the students to "Continue to evolve even when it's hard."
Throughout the event students also had the chance to win scholarships and other prizes. There was even a go-go band in what was truly a festive atmosphere all about them and their next steps.
