Troopers say major crash on I-395 started with two cars racing

Troopers attempted to pull over the cars, but both drivers refused to stop. A police pursuit was initiated.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — A 19-year-old who was caught attempting to race along Interstate 395 in Fairfax County is facing charges. Police say the driver is accused of causing a major crash while attempting to flee police.

At 12:16 a.m., Virginia State Police Troopers were made aware of two cars attempting to race along I-395 southbound in Fairfax County.

Troopers attempted to pull over the cars, but both drivers refused to stop. One car got off at Esdall Road, while a second car, later identified as a Toyota Camry, sped away in the southbound lanes of I-395.

A police pursuit was initiated.

As the driver of the Camry attempted to get away, investigators say the car "split the lane" and tried to drive between two other southbound cars. This is when the Camry collided with both cars, causing them to lose control and crash near Exit 2 for Edsall Road. Meanwhile, the Camry continued on for a short distance until finally coming to a stop.

Police say the driver of the Camry, 19-year-old Kennedy W. Meja Medina, of Silver Spring, and a passenger were taken to an area hospital for help with non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash

Mejia Medina is charged with with eluding police, racing that results in an injury, damage to property and taillight violations.

Investigators say victims in the other two vehicles also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
