FAIRFAX, Virginia — One of the dogs who survived a deadly plane crash over the weekend is now receiving treatment at an animal hospital in Connecticut. Whiskey, a 4-month-old Labrador mix, was one of three dogs being transported from Maryland to New York by pilot Seuk Kim.
According to the Greene County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened on Sunday at 6:10 p.m. The plane, a Mooney M20J, was traveling from Maryland to Albany. Kim and another dog, a puppy named Lisa, died in the crash.
Whiskey suffered two broken legs and minor chest injuries. He underwent surgeries to repair the damage and is recovering, according to Pieper Veterinary Hospital in Middletown.
"This little guy's story has definitely captured all of our hearts - to go through such a traumatic event and still want to wag his tail and give kisses is a testament to little Whiskey's amazing spirit," hospital staff wrote in a Facebook update.
Whiskey still has a long journey ahead of him, but the staff at Pieper called him a "little miracle puppy."
"We're honored to play a role in his recovery, and we'll continue to update you on his progress," the hospital said.
The other surviving pup, 1.5-year-old Pluto was evaluated at Capital District Veterinary Hospital before being released to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley. Pluto suffered pulmonary contusions and internal and external bruising but is reported to be recovering well.
Kim worked with several nonprofit organizations across the country dedicated to rescuing and transporting dogs to safe homes, including Connie the Container Dog.
Kim leaves behind a wife and three teenage children. Donations to support the family and help with funeral costs have already raised nearly $135,000. Donations can be made here.
A celebration of life event is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 5 in Fairfax, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP.
