Box truck hits disabled vehicle on I-66, killing woman, child

A man and a 3-month-old were hospitalized, police said.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly crash on Interstate 66 that left a child and woman dead, the police department said Tuesday. Three others suffered serious injuries in the crash, according to investigators.

Troopers were called to the westbound lanes of I-66 near mile marker 46 in Prince William County around 2:30 p.m. on Friday. An investigation found that a family traveling in a 2019 Hyundai Tucson pulled over on the right shoulder, where their vehicle was disabled.

A 2018 Isuzu box truck was heading westbound on the interstate when it went off the right side of the road and struck the disabled Tucson. The car went into a jersey wall and was pushed along the shoulder about 400 feet. It is not clear what caused the truck to leave the interstate.

Matthew Demlein, a spokesperson for VSP, said two passengers in the Hyundai, 27-year-old Krystal Akers of Dublin, Virginia and an 11-year-old girl, died from their injuries at a nearby hospital. The 51-year-old driver was seriously hurt. A 3-month-old was also seriously hurt. A fourth passenger, a 55-year-old, suffered minor injuries.

The 26-year-old driver of the Isuzu truck was not seriously hurt. His 23-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries, according to Demlein.

The police department said charges are pending, but no one has been formally charged at this point. The crash remains under investigation.
