2 pedestrians killed after separate crashes on I-495

The crashes occurred within minutes of each other near the eastbound and westbound 176 exits. Police say they are not related.

WASHINGTON — Two people are dead after two separate pedestrian crashes on I-495 in Fairfax County early Sunday morning. 

The incidents occurred within minutes of each other near the eastbound and westbound 176 exits, according to Virginia State Police. VSP says the crashes are not related. 

The first crash happened around 3:39 a.m. VSP responded to a crash on the shoulder of the westbound lanes of I-495, east of Exit 176. 

It appears the pedestrian was stopped on the shoulder, changing a tire on a vehicle, when they were hit by a truck, according to VSP. 

The pedestrian died at the scene, according to VSP. The driver of the truck was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. It is unclear how severe their injuries are. 

Then, at approximately 3:53 a.m., police found a woman in the roadway in the eastbound lanes of I-495 near Exit 176 in Fairfax County. 

Witnesses told police that the woman "stumbled" into traffic and was hit by a car. She died at the scene. 

According to a preliminary investigation, a 2005 Honda Accord was heading eastbound in the right center lane was unable to avoid hitting the woman, later identified as 35-year-old Vanessa V. Schwartz of Alexandria.

After hitting the woman, the Accord was struck by a by a 2021 Acura RDX, and then it hit a Jersey wall.

A 2023 Nissan Rogue struck the RDX.

Both crashes are under investigation.
