87-year-old man struck, killed by car in Reston, police say

RESTON, Va. — A portion of Reston Parkway was shut down for a deadly crash. . 

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, officers responded to the scene of a crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Stratford House Place. The pedestrian, a man, was taken to an area hospital where he later died. Police say the striking car stayed at the scene until officers arrived.

The man was identified as Peter McCandless, 87, of Reston. Police say he was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of Reston Parkway from west to east at Market Street just after 7 a.m. when he was struck. McCandless was apparently walking inside the crosswalk but crossed against the signal.

The investigation into this deadly crash is active and ongoing.

Reston Parkway Southbound is currently closed for investigation. Drivers are asked to avoid the area for the time being.
