Deputy struck by teen driver released from rehab

Deputy Jeremy Krapfl has been released from rehab after he was thrown from his motorcycle while responding to an accident in Leesburg two weeks ago.

LEESBURG, Va. — It’s been two weeks since a crash in Loudoun County sent two deputies to the hospital.

While one of them was already released after suffering minor injuries, Deputy Jeremy Krapfl sustained more serious wounds since he was struck first. Jeremy Krapfl was transitioned from the hospital to a rehab center in Aldie last weekend, where he continues his physical therapy.

His wife Dawn Krapfl said despite the circumstances, his recovery from suffering broke bones on the left side of his body is going well.

“It’s like, ‘how are you here?’” she questioned. “He flew off the bike with his boot still attached to it. He remembers the car coming over and just saying, ‘Oh, crap.’” He remembers somersaulting and landing on the ground.”

The Loudoun Co. Sheriff’s Office believed ice may have played a factor in the crash near Watson Road and Manbar Lane in Leesburg around 8 a.m. on January 11.

The Loudoun-Dulles Fraternal Order of Police said the two were on their way to an accident when the driver lost control and crossed the center line.

The driver was a juvenile who remained on the scene and was released to their parents, according to an LCSO spokesperson. The teen driver has since been served a summons for failure to maintain control of his car.

Dawn Krapfl said while her husband was laying on the ground, he dispatched his own call.

Dispatch audio from the day incident caught him saying, “We need help! Watson Road just north of 15!”

“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for both of us,” Dawn Krapfl said. “It’s been exhausting and tiring. I almost feel like the reality hasn’t set in yet but I’m thankful that he’s here.”

Jeremy Krapfl is expected to be released from the rehab center on Saturday. The sheriff’s office is taking care of the medical bills, according to the family. He still has to undergo at least one other surgery.

The Loudoun-Dulles Fraternal Order of Police created a GoFundMe page to help support the family with additional expenses as he continues his recovery.

The GoFundMe read, “While workers comp will cover the basic hospital costs and Jeremy's base salary, there are other expenses that will be incurred during his recovery. This includes his wife needing to take time off from work to attend to Jeremy, daily travel expenses and food while at the hospital. It is unknown what modifications may need to be made to Jeremy and Dawn's house once he is released from the hospital to recover at home.”
