5 hospitalized after crash on I-66 in Fair Oaks

The crash happened at I-66 and Route 50 in the Fair Oaks area.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Five people were taken to area hospitals after a crash involving a stolen vehicle on Monday.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the car was reported stolen roughly five minutes after noon.

Preliminarily, investigators believe the driver of the stolen vehicle left a parking lot and sped away on Route 50 after seeing officers. The car crashed at the ramp to Interstate 66.

The stolen vehicle did not hit any other cars.

All five adults who were in the car were taken to area hospitals. One of them has life-threatening injuries, the police department said.

Hours later, Fairfax County Police announced that one of the people injured in the crash stole an ambulance from Fairfax Hospital. The ambulance has since been recovered by the suspect remains at large.

According to investigators, two firearms and narcotics were also recovered at the scene.

Route 50 eastbound and westbound ramps to I-66 were closed for the investigation, but they have since reopened.

Police say they did not chase after the stolen car but the Internal Affairs Bureau is conducting an administrative review.

The Prince William County Police Department confirmed to WUSA that the crashed car was reported stolen on Feb. 15. Investigators say the car was taken around 8:30 a.m. when the owner reportedly left it running with the keys in the ignition.
