FREDERICK COUNTY, Va. — In Virginia, Frederick County Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 11, after the school system received ongoing threats.
According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and FCPS, threats of possible school-related violence circulated on social media Tuesday. Police say a preliminary investigation indicates that the online threats did not originate in the county, or even the Commonwealth.
Separately, an unspecified earlier incident that was reported not on any school property also caused concern for school safety, according to the sheriff’s office.
With both the online threats and the separate incident, FCPS said it made the decision to keep all schools closed Wednesday out of an abundance of caution. All schools and administrative offices will be closed.
Police are working so that schools can safely reopen on Thursday.
These threats come after two school shootings last week. On Sept. 4, a student at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, is accused of a school shooting that killed two students and two teachers; two days later, a student at Joppatowne High School outside Baltimore is accused of a shooting that killed another student.
