Fireworks start townhouse fire, displacing 10 people

The blaze left seven adults and three children displaced.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A fire at a Woodbridge townhome reportedly caused by fireworks has left seven adults and three children displaced.

According to Prince William County Fire and Rescue, units were dispatched at 12:40 p.m. to a townhouse on fire in the 14400 block of Brentwood Court. Crews were able to extinguish the flames and all occupants were evacuated prior to the units arriving.

A total of three homes had damage and no injuries were reported.

The Fire Marshal's Office reported that the fire was caused by the improper disposal of fireworks in a combustible trash receptacle inside a storage shed.

The Fire Marshal's Office advises that used fireworks should never be disposed of into a combustible container without first ensuring they are completely extinguished by hosing them down or submerging them in water. The office also recommends allowing them to sit for 24 hours before disposing in a non-combustible container and not putting used fireworks in a trash container inside or next to a home or other structure.
