40 people displaced after fire at Rockville women's shelter

The fire left about 40 residents temporarily displaced.

ROCKVILLE, Md. — A fire at a women's shelter in Rockville Thursday morning left residents displaced.

According to Pete Piringer of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, crews were dispatched to the shelter on Crabbs Branch Way around 10 a.m. after a report of smoke coming from the roof and attic. Upon arrival, the crews discovered a fan motor in a bathroom had caught fire that extended into the attic.

About 40 occupants were evacuated from the building, including staff, and temporarily displaced. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross of the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region disaster action team is currently assisting about 40 residents who were impacted by the the fire. The team will provide essential services and continue to work with those impacted and their families.
