ANNANDALE, Va. — Fairfax County Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash in Annandale, Virginia that sent seven people to the hospital Sunday morning, including one man who died en route.
Two people involved in the crash were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Fairfax County Police posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“It’s definitely heartbreaking and my heart goes out to the families of the deceased and injured," a teen who lives nearby, Joseph Tso said.
The crash happened at Braddock Road and Bradfield Drive. Braddock Road was closed in both directions at King David Boulevard while detectives investigated, but is now open.
“I was just in my house, had the window open and out of the blue there was a huge crash,” Tso said.
Preliminarily, detectives determined the driver of a 2006 Lexus RX330I attempted a left turn from Bradfield Drive onto westbound Braddock Road. The driver of the Lexus turned in front of the driver of a 2024 BMW X6 who was traveling eastbound on Braddock Road resulting in the crash. The Lexus had five occupants and the BMW had two occupants. All were taken to the hospital. Three had injuries considered to be life-threatening.
One of the Lexus passengers, Yun Hu, 72, of Annandale was pronounced dead at the hospital. In the days following the crash, two more victims died from their injuries. Police identified those victims as 63-year-old Hong Tang and 68-year-old Yan Zhou. Both were passengers in the Lexus RX330I when the crash occurred.
Four passengers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from the hospital a short time later. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.
People who live in the area tell WUSA9 they're shocked to see this happen but they said there's been a long history of drivers speeding on this road.
“The speed limit on Braddock is 45 but most the time people don’t drive 45 on Braddock because it’s a big road and that’s why you have to be extremely careful," one resident, Tony Pham said.
“This section of Braddock Road specifically I know there’s a lot of speeding drivers all the time," Tso said.
According to V-DOT's data reviewed by WUSA9: In 2023, there were four reported crashes, two with injuries on the same block, near Braddock and King Davis Blvd. There were 15 total crashes in his half mile stretch (Guinea to Rolling Road).
Pham said he's had several issues on this road and tries to take his time while driving and making turns in the area.
“I do make a left turn from this street, making a left turn to Braddock sometimes to go somewhere and I’ve noticed it’s very dangerous," Pham said.
After seeing another crash happen, Pham and other neighbors said they are more concerned. One man mentioned moving out of his home because of the speeding.
“I’ve seen some people have some close calls, even I had some close calls," Pham said. " I'm going to be even more careful from now on."
