'This boy is in the streets and my son is in the dirt' | Family and police seek justice in Bailey's Crossroads murder

Police say Maurice Anderson, 24, was shot and killed in the Build America Plaza in Bailey's Crossroads on May 7.

BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, Va. — Maurice Anderson was just 24 years-old when he was shot and killed in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia.

Anderson was from Washington, D.C. and one of seven children. He had big hopes for his future, according to his family.

"He cared about his mother and siblings. He went above and beyond for anybody. He wasn't into the street life. He was working towards obtaining his degree in technology," said Sequitta, his Aunt.

She and several other family members spoke with WUSA9 Thursday night, in hopes that it will bring attention to Anderson's murder.

On May 7, 2023, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 3800 block of George Mason Drive in Bailey's Crossroads around 2:19 a.m., according to Fairfax County police. Once at the scene, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Both men were taken to a local hospital, but one of the victims, Anderson did not survive.

"Losing Moe was something that no one ever expected," his sister Danielle said Thursday night.

Investigators believe an argument broke out in the parking lot that led to another man firing multiple rounds and hitting the two victims, according to police. The gunman entered his vehicle and drove away.

His family told WUSA9 that he was with a friend who worked at one of the businesses in the shopping plaza, when a different group of people got into an argument.

"Maurice had nothing to do with the situation he didn't know the people that got into the argument," his family members said.

Investigators identified Javon Antonio Reid, 32, of Maryland as the shooter back on May 17, and charged him with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. However, they still haven't been able to track him down.

"It is almost eight months and this man is running the street and my son is still not here," said Anderson's mother, Zarita.

"Somebody knows something out there. They know where he is. They know where he's hiding and we want to make sure we can take him into custody and give some peace of mind to the family," said Lt. James Curry, from the Fairfax County Police Department.

His family says they just want justice.

"You (the shooter) was bold enough to come outside with a weapon and put all these lives in danger but not man enough to stand up and face the consequences of your actions," said Sequitta.

"It tears me apart every day that this boy is in the streets and my son is in the dirt and I can't tell my son that I love him," said Zarita.
