14-year-old boy dies on Thanksgiving after Falls Church crash involving 6 teens

A verified GoFundMe page said 14-year-old Kevin Landaverde died on Thanksgiving Day after a crash in Fairfax County.

MCLEAN, Va. — One of the teens critically hurt in a crash in Falls Church on Nov. 20 died from his injuries days later, according to a verified GoFundMe account.

Kevin Landaverde, a 14-year-old Longfellow Middle School student, died on Thanksgiving Day, per Christy Lucia, who helped create the donation page to support his family.

The account said Landaverde’s brother, who was also involved in the wreck, was released from the hospital on the same day. Lucia said he leaves behind another sibling, a father and his mother.

“It’s incredibly heartbreaking,” Lucia told WUSA9. “His family is obviously struggling quite a bit. My husband has been in contact with [Kevin's mother] quite a bit. She wasn't able to talk for a few days, just text, but now she’s more able to talk.”

The GoFundMe has raised more than $44,000 in three days.

Two teenagers remain at the hospital in critical condition.

Fairfax County Police said alcohol and speed played a factor when a 17-year-old driver veered off the road, hit a tree, and spun out. It happened at the corner of Shreve Road and Pioneer Lane at around 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20. Five of the passengers were ejected while one had to be extricated out of the SUV.

Police said the driver, who is facing charges, was the only person wearing a seatbelt.

“We're being careful, being cautious, and we're working with the Commonwealth's Attorney's office to make sure when we do place charges, and we will place charges, that they're the right charges and they're going to serve to hold someone accountable,” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told WUSA9. “So many good choices people can make. It's just a matter of making the right choices.”

Chief Davis said the incident is a reminder why parents need to talk to their kids and know who they’re with.

Lucia said she hopes there’s more emphasis to combat this type of reckless behavior.

“I hope these kids will wear their seatbelts, I hope that underage drinking will be more enforced and that kids will know that their judgement is marred when they're drinking,” Lucia added.

WUSA9 confirmed through family that another set of brothers, Marshall High School students, were also involved in the wreck.

“Right now, I feel like everything has fallen apart,” their mother told WUSA9 over the phone. “I'm hoping for a miracle for every one of them. I don’t feel like giving information because I feel like everything is crashing down.”
