FAIRFAX, Va. — Fairfax County Police are investigating a crash involving a driver crashing into a Bagel Shop in Fair Lakes.
On Tuesday, police say an elderly man was parking his car in the Fair Lakes Shopping Center near the Bagel Joy shop around 3 p.m. when he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. The driver ended up driving his car into the building.
Fairfax County Police and the Fire Department both responded to the shop. One person inside the bagel shop was struck by glass but was not seriously injured and refused to be taken to the hospital.
The driver was evaluated in the field and first responders cleared him and determined he did not need any additional treatment. The exact age of the driver has not been released by police.
It is unknown if there are any serious structural issues at this time or what the cost of repairs will be.
Bagel Joy wasn’t open during the time of the crash. It was scheduled to have its grand opening on Monday, May 13 according to their website.
The business began in 2020 when David and Caleb Picard began experimenting with recipes for authentic bagels. In 2021 the pair began selling their bagels at the One Loudoun Farmers’ Market.
Three years later, the Picards began renovating the former Bagel Buddies location in Fair Lakes Shopping Center. It is unclear now when they’ll have their grand moment.
A representative for Bagel Joy released a statement to WUSA9 Tuesday evening:
"The store had final inspections scheduled with the county for tomorrow but due to today's incident those have been cancelled. We will not be able to open next week and are not sure of an exact new date. We are just thankful that no one was injured and we look forward to welcoming the community as soon as we can. People can follow us on Facebook (@YumBagelJoy) or Instagram (@BagelJoy) for updates on when we will be able to open."
