Dog trapped in HVAC air vent in Fairfax County rescued

The dog has been returned to its owner safely, officials said.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — When Fairfax County says 'protect and serve' they are not just talking about the citizens, but also the four-legged ones.

On Friday morning, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and Fairfax County Police posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the good news of a rescue that happened through teamwork. They stated that a 17-year-old Shih Tzu was trapped in a HVAC air vent in a home within the county.

"Yippee-Ki-Yay, First responders to the rescue," the police department said. They stated that with a seamless plan of action, a reciprocating saw and assistance from the fire department they were able to be successful in their mission. The fire and rescue team said their Engine 417 from Centreville responded to the home to help.

The dog was returned to its owner safely, officials said. In body camera worn footage, which was posted, the dog could be seen carefully being wrapped in cloth before being handed over to the owner.

It is not known how the dog made its way into the ventilation system.

"This dog has watched her favorite Christmas movie, 'Die Hard' way too many times," the police department said, referencing the action film.
