FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Bagel fans in Fairfax County will have to wait a little bit longer for a new bakery to open. The owners of Bagel Joy were set to open the shop Monday, following a closure caused by a car slamming into the storefront in late June. In a Facebook post, owners said they aren't quite ready to open to the public just yet.
"We are crossing our t’s and dotting our i’s and we have one more “t” to cross. This means we won’t be prepared to open Monday," the shop said in the post Sunday night. The shop did not give a new date for its grand opening.
Bagel Joy is a father-son owned and operated business that began during the pandemic. David and Caleb Picard began experimenting with recipes for authentic bagels.
"I was craving a good bagel during the pandemic and I couldn't find one and I started making them," said Picard.
In 2021 the pair began selling their bagels at the One Loudoun Farmers’ Market. Three years later, the Picards began renovating the former Bagel Buddies location in the Fair Lakes Shopping Center. On June 24, just days before the shops grand opening, a car drove through the front window, after the driver mistook the gas for the brake.
Picard says his son Caleb, and his son's girlfriend, Julia, who are both managers at the shop were inside. He was about five minutes away running errands.
He says Julia was sitting at the front of the shop when it happened.
"Right in the front of house with her back to the glass. When the car came in, it struck her, and she went flying," said Picard.
He says she was understandably shaken up, but luckily, she was not seriously hurt.
The driver was evaluated at the scene and cleared soon after.
Picard told WUSA9 that Bagel Joy got its name because they care about two things. Bagels and bringing joy to their community. They hope to bring both of these things to Fairfax County as soon as possible.
