CENTREVILLE, Va. — An investigation is underway after two people were hit by a driver while crossing the road in Centreville Tuesday night.

Just before 10 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Braddock Road and Pickwick Road for two people who were hit by a driver. The driver remained at the intersection until police arrived.

Detectives say Rubia Marisol Vasquez Matteo, 46, of Clifton, was crossing Pickwick Road, not in a crosswalk, with a man Tuesday night. The driver of a 2012 Jeep Cherokee was heading east on Braddock Road and attempted to turn left on Pickwick Road and hit both people in the roadway. Vasquez Matteo was taken to an area hospital for help, while the man with her was not seriously injured. Unfortunately, Vasquez Matteo died a short time later at the hospital.

Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol are factors in the crash.
