Two 17-year-old boys arrested for pursuit that reached speeds of 115 mph, police say

Virginia State Police recovered two loaded handguns from the vehicle.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Two Maryland teenagers face a series of charges, including illegal possession of a firearm, after leading Virginia State Police on a pursuit Wednesday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m., a Virginia state trooper spotted a 2012 Infiniti G37X heading north on Interstate-395 south of Duke Street. The troopers radar recorded the car traveling at 89 mph in a 55 mph zone. The Infiniti was also displaying fictitious temporary registration tags, Virginia State Police said in a release.

The trooper activated his emergency lights and sirens to try to stop the vehicle for speeding, but the driver kept driving, cutting across all four lanes of traffic in an attempt to lose the trooper.

The Infiniti exited I-395 at Duke Street and continued west toward Beauregard Street, then returned to I-395 where it continued to aggressively change lanes at speeds of up to 115 mph, police said.

It was during one of those aggressive lane changes at Seminary Road that the driver lost control of the car and struck a 2008 Honda Civic and a Jersey wall.

A 17-year-old driver from Capitol Heights, Maryland, and a 17-year-old passenger from Prince George, Maryland, were taken into custody, according to VSP. Two loaded handguns and prescription narcotics were recovered at the scene.

Both boys were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. The driver of the Honda, a 29-year-old man from Fredericksburg, Virginia, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver of the Infiniti was charged with reckless driving, improper registration, one felony count of eluding police, failure to maintain control, one felony count of possession of a firearm by a minor, one felony count of possession of a concealed weapon, and one felony count of a firearm while in possession of Schedule I/II narcotic.

The passenger of the Infiniti was charged with one felony count of possession of a firearm by a minor, one felony count of possession of a concealed firearm, one felony count of possession of a firearm while in possession of a Schedule I/II narcotic, and one felony count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
