STAFFORD, Va. — Two men are in custody after an early morning race along Jefferson Davis Highway.
At around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, Stafford County Deputy J.D. Hurt was traveling northbound on Jefferson Davis Highway near Foreston Woods Drive when to vehicles came racing southbound toward him at over 90 miles per hour, police said.
One of the suspects stopped along Foreston Woods Drive, while the second suspect refused to stop and fled into an apartment complex.
The driver who stopped was identified by police as 28-year-old Luke Brackney of Stafford. Police said Brackney appeared to be intoxicated and had a suspended license. An open alcohol container was found in his vehicle, and a suspected controlled substance was found in his pocket, police said. He was charged with DUI, reckless driving by speed and racing, possession of a controlled substance, and other charges. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on $2,000 bond.
Other deputies converged on the apartment complex to track down the other driver, who was driving a gray Ford Taurus. Deputy M.A. Holub found the vehicle parked askew near 112 White Pine Circle.
Deputies searched the area and found the second suspect, identified as Christian Peranio. Peranio is described as 6 feet tall and 225 pounds. Police said Peranio was attempting to hide behind a tree that was about six inches in diameter.
The hiding spot was ineffective, and police took 27-year-old Peranio into custody. An open alcohol container was also found in his car, according to police. He has been charged with DUI, reckless driving by speed, reckless driving racing, eluding and drinking while driving.
He was taken to the Rappahannock Regional Jail and held on $1,500 bond.
