Nonprofit feeds hundreds of families in need in Prince George’s County on World Hunger Day

Passion and Compassion is helping to feed those in need.

RIVERDALE, Md. — Hundreds of families in Prince George’s County will get a free, healthy meal thanks to the nonprofit Passion & Compassion, and Christian Life Center Church on World Hunger Day.

Prince George's County councilmembers Wanika Fisher (District 2) and Eric Olson (District 3) will join Passion & Compassion to feed 300 families in need on Tuesday at Park Tanglewood located at 5671 Tanglewood Drive, Riverdale Park, MD.

Pastor Ben Slye said the church has been doing free food giveaways for the past 13 years and the need continues to grow in the county.

According to the media spokesperson for Prince George’s County council, data shows more than 16% of children in Prince George's County live in households that experienced food insecurity at some point last year.

Pastor Slye told WUSA9 he holds multiple food distributions every week at different locations throughout the county.

Organizers began setting up and unpacking fresh produce around 6:30 Tuesday morning.
The event began with a press conference at 8:15 a.m. with councilmembers speaking about hunger in their districts and countywide.

Also at the press conference, Passion & Compassion Board Chair Michael Herman, Esq. and Executive Director Ben Slye spoke about work their organization has done for more than a decade to address hunger in the region, including distributing more than 2.8 million pounds of produce and 3 million meals throughout Maryland and D.C. in 2023.

Between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., volunteers, including council staff, will prepare bags of food for distribution, and free healthy meals will be served to those waiting.
