DC lawyers using pickleball to combat food insecurity in the DMV

'Food from the Bar' has raised nearly $3 million for the Capital Area Food Bank.

WASHINGTON — Over a million people in our area are food insecure, and that's why local law firms are hosting the first annual pickleball tournament to raise money for the Capital Area Food Bank.

Food From the Bar is a program, made up of nearly 40 local law firms, raising money for the food bank. The program has been around for 16 years, and has raised over $3 million for the food bank, but this is the first year they’re doing a pickleball tournament.

Organizers say they hope this will bring even more people out. In 2021, the fundraiser brought in nearly $700,000 for the food bank.

"We’re trying to think of ways to increase interest in our Food From the Bar activity and also to get more people out. It’s healthy to play and to also raise money for the food bank," said Andy Cook, with K&L Gates LLP. Cook has been part of this fundraiser for years.

This year's fundraiser is coming at a time where more families need access to meals since kids will not be able to get food from school programs during the summer.

"This campaign raises money specifically to bring in food so we can feed the kids through the summer. Every dollar that’s donated gives two meals to children over the summer," said Mary Beth Healy the Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer at Capital Area Food Bank.

Ticket prices start at $100 per player. All tickets include access to an open bar and light food fare. Tennis attire and flat-soled tennis shoes are recommended for the tournament. The event runs from 6-9 at the Congressional Country Club located at 8500 River Rd Bethesda, MD 20817. Click here to register.

Participants are encouraged to register as a team of two but individual registrants are welcome as well. Individual registrants will be paired with a partner based on skill level. In addition to the tournament, there will be an option for friendly, non-competitive play.  The tournament will follow a round-robin style, with all participants likely playing three matches. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of beginner and intermediate/advanced flights.
