Woman arrested after hit-and-run, stabbing rampage in Prince George's County denied bail

Police charged Tanay Stallings-Brown with dozens of offenses, including attempted first-degree murder.

LANDOVER HILLS, Md. — A 31-year-old Baltimore woman appeared in front of a Prince George's County judge Monday afternoon, after being charged in connection to a violent crime spree that left six people hurt. The spree all happened over the course of an hour and a half on Thursday night.

Tanay Stallings-Brown was arrested and charged Friday with dozens of offenses, including attempted murder and assault, in connection to five random attacks stretching from Capitol Heights to Lanham. These attacks included running down five pedestrians, jumping out of the car to stab one of the pedestrians, a 15-year-old girl, as well as stabbing a 70-year-old cab driver, Bamikole Ibikunle, at a gas station. The final attack was caught on surveillance camera.

Charging documents say most of the crimes were committed while Stallings-Brown was behind the wheel of gray Chevrolet Malibu with Illinois plates that was rented from an Avis in Baltimore.

Both the teen girl and Ibikunle remain hospitalized in critical condition, according to authorities. Ibikunle's daughter told WUSA9 her father was a survivor of a liver transplant and called it a miracle that he was alive after his attack.

She said her father is a pastor who loves preaching the word of God.

"Everybody that has met him knows that he's a very cool, calm person. He doesn't bother anybody. He's a loving and caring father," she said.

There was no mention of Stallings-Brown's mental health status during her bail hearing Monday, but her mother told the Washington Post in an interview that she had sought treatment at two Maryland hospitals for schizophrenia, but was not admitted.

Stallings-Brown's public defender told the judge she is a mother of on child, and employed at an energy firm, when asking for her release. The judge. however, said Stallings-Brown's background includes other accusations of assault and said public safety demands that she stay locked up pending a plea and trial.

In 2016, Stallings-Brown was arrested and charged with possession of a handgun and sentenced to three years probation. In 2018 she was arrested for second-degree assault. Stallings-Brown was found guilty and sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Here's a timeline of how the Thursday attacks unfolded:

At 5:05 p.m. officers were dispatched to the Forest Park Drive and Ritchie Road in Capitol Heights for reports of a pedestrian struck. Preliminary reports reveal that the driver of the car went up the sidewalk and struck the victim. The victim has not been identified, but police say she is an adult woman, who suffered minor injuries.

At 5:15 p.m. officers were called to 20 Ritchie Road in Landover, Maryland for two pedestrians struck. Similar to the crash in Capitol Heights, the driver got up on the sidewalk and ran over the two pedestrians. In this case, the driver of the car got out and stabbed one of the victims. The stabbing victim was identified as a 15-year-old who suffered critical injuries. The man hit by the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

At 5:30 p.m. officers arrived to the 1400 block of Addison Road South in Capitol Heights for another pedestrian struck. One adult male suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Minutes later, calls came in for a fifth pedestrian struck along the 1000 block of Addison Road South. The man struck suffered minor injuries.

Charging documents say Stallings-Brown then drove to a gas station around 6:25 p.m. in the 9100 block of Annapolis Road in Lanham. The documents say Stallings-Brown purchased a bottle of water from the gas station before speaking with a cab driver in the parking lot.

According to the documents released on Monday, Stallings-Brown spoke to the driver through a window asking for a ride. She got into the back of the man's car, and the driver tried to figure out where Stallings-Brown wanted to go. That's when she pulled out a knife and stabbing the man in the chest, the documents say.

The driver was able to get the knife out of his chest. Stallings-Brown got out of the car and moved around to the driver-side door, in an attempt to attack the cab driver again. The cab driver used his door to push her away, and she ran off to her parked car and left.

The cab driver went inside the gas station where he received medical aid from a responding officers until medics arrived, documents said.

It was only after the stabbing at the gas station that police learned that Stallings-Brown and the rented Chevrolet Malibu were involved in the other hit-and-run crashes across the county.

Police used surveillance images from the gas station attack and the driver's license photo of Stallings-Brown she used to rent the car to track her down.

At 10:50 p.m. Baltimore police located and arrested Stallings-Brown and transported her back to Prince George's County to be charged.

Police say they have not recovered the weapon used in the stabbings.

During a press conference held Friday evening, Prince George's County Chief of Police Malik Aziz said they do not have a motive at this time. But, Stallings-Brown does have a record dating back to 2011 in the city of Baltimore.

Baltimore Police confirmed that Stallings-Brown was the suspect in another stabbing assault on Wednesday. Officers were dispatched to the 5300 block of Valiquet Avenue, when they arrived they found a woman suffering from multiple life-threatening stab wounds. The victim was taken to the hospital and has since been released.

The investigation into this crime is active and ongoing. Prince George's County Police are currently searching for anyone else who may have been a victim in Thursday's violent rampage.
