Silver Spring named third most generous city by GoFundMe

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Silver Spring has been named one of the most generous cities in America, according to GoFundMe. Silver Spring has made the list the last four years in a row. While it ranked No. 1 in 2020, in 2024, it secured the No. 3 spot.

According to GoFundMe, Silver Spring residents supported a wide variety of causes over the past year, ranging from helping a puppeteer diagnosed with cancer, supporting a mother and her nine children facing homelessness after leaving Afghanistan and helping a kayaker get to the the Paris Olympic games.

The generous people of Silver Spring also helped raise $18,000 for a beloved costume shop.

Overall, Maryland residents contributed over $47 million in donations to more than 100,000 fundraisers in 2023, with the most supported categories being Animals, Family and Education. The data does no include medical, memorial, and emergency fundraisers, GoFundMe says.

Montgomery County had the most donations per capita in the state in 2023.

The title will be celebrated by GoFundMe at the FRESHFARM Farmers Market in Downtown Silver Spring on June 8 to celebrate the city’s generosity. The event will include a photo booth, treats from local businesses, and free merchandise.
