CHEVY CHASE, Md. — The heartbroken family of a Maryland parole and probation officer found dead in Chevy Chase last week is asking for the community's help. An online fundraiser for Davis Martinez's family was started Wednesday, with the goal of raising $15,000.
Davis Martinez, 33, was found dead at a home in Chevy Chase after he did not return from work. According to police, Martinez had gone to the home of Emanuel Sewell for a welfare check. He was found with blunt force trauma injuries. Sewell was later arrested and charged with murder.
Martinez is the first Maryland Division of Parole and Probation agent in the state to ever be killed by a client while on duty, according to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.
"The loss of a law enforcement officer who was performing his duties for the state of Maryland is a tragedy," Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones said. "The death of agent Martinez is a stark reminder of the dangers we face everyday."
Michael Martinez, Davis Martinez's brother, said he is "heartbroken and devastated" by the sudden and unexpected loss.
Michael Martinez said his brother was the sole provider for his 66-year-old mother and 29-year-old brother with autism.
"The weight of this responsibility now falls heavily on our family’s shoulders," Michael Martinez wrote on the GoFundMe page.
Michael Martinez said the money raised will go toward funeral expenses not covered by the state. Money raised beyond that will go toward his family.
"Our family is shattered and struggling to pick up the pieces, but with your help, we may find some solace in knowing that his legacy lives on through the love and support of those who care," Michael Martinez writes.
