Fatal car accident in Greenbelt kills Riverdale man

Police believe the victim veered off the roadway and into a guardrail, causing the vehicle to hit a tree.

GREENBELT, Md. — A 37-year-old man is dead following a car accident in Greenbelt on Christmas day.

Prince George's County Police responded to Kenilworth Avenue and Calvert Road for a single-vehicle accident around 2 a.m. on Dec. 25. 

When police arrived to the scene, they located an SUV that was in a wooded area just off the road.

According to officials, investigators believe the SUV was traveling south on Kenilworth Avenue approaching Old Calvert Road when the SUV veered off the road, struck a guardrail and hit a tree. 

The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died on the scene. He was identified as 37-year-old Jose Galvan-Montesinos of Riverdale.

The passenger was also not wearing a seat belt and suffered critical injuries. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police said they believe speed and "intoxicants" contributed to the crash but the accident is still under investigation.
