A 34-year-old Department of Defense police officer died in a car crash. Now, Maryland State Police are looking into what exactly happened.

INDIAN HEAD, Md. — Maryland State Police on Monday said they are investigating the death of a 34-year-old Department of Defense civilian police officer who was killed in a fiery crash in Charles County.

The crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 18 near the intersection of Maryland Route 224 Chicamuxen and Sweden Point roads in Charles County, police said.

Sgt. Anthony Oglesby Jr. was driving a U.S. Navy Police issued 2015 Ford Taurus when he drove off the side of the road and struck a tree, causing the tree to fall on the patrol car and catch on fire, MSP said. Oglesby died in the crash, police said.

Oglesby's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore and is pending an autopsy. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said.

U.S. Navy Police confirmed that Oglesby was on duty when he died in the crash but did not elaborate on what he was doing that evening while working, or why he was traveling in that part of Maryland.

The Naval District of Washington Fire Department Company No. 43 posted a picture on Facebook, paying respect to the Naval District of Washington Police Department and its loss.

Oglesby is from Bowie, Md., Maryland State Police said.

The members of Engine Co.43 send our heart felt condolences to NDWPD and the family on the loss of Sergeant Anthony Oglesby. EOW 12-18-2019
