Homeowner, utility worker killed in Harford County house explosion

The 73-year-old homeowner and a 35-year-old BGE utility employee were identified as the men killed.

HARFORD COUNTY, Md. — Firefighters with Harford County are investigating a fatal house explosion.

Crews were dispatched to the 2300 block of Arthurs Woods Drive for reports of a gas leak Sunday morning at 6:42 a.m. As crews headed to the scene they received multiple calls that the leak had turned into a home explosion.

When they arrived, they located one person who was pronounced dead at the scene.  Authorities tweeted that the victim pronounced dead was a BGE contractor. He was later identified as 35-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Alvarado

A second victim was located near the remains of the home just after 6 p.m. Police later identified the man as the 73-year-old homeowner, Ray Corkran Jr.

A third victim, a neighbor, sustained injuries from the explosion. First responders treated her on the scene.

During a press conference authorities said that the home was listed for sale and it was unclear if anyone else was still living inside. Officials also said the contractor pronounced dead was called on the scene for an electric issue prior to the house explosion.

Very little information regarding what caused the explosion has been released at this time. However, authorities say there is no evidence of criminal activity and they will continue to focus on accidental causes. The damages are expected to be in the millions.

"Our hearts are broken for the two victims and their families. Our team of highly qualified investigators and our partners at ATF are dedicated to providing an answer that will lead to safer communities," said Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray. "A tragedy of this size is heart-wrenching for Maryland. I want to thank every Harford County Fire & EMS service member that responded, Harford County Sheriff's Office, Harford County Department of Emergency Services and their Special Operations Team, and Harford County Executive Bob Cassilly for their outstanding all-in approach to teamwork."

Twelve families have been displaced as a result of the explosion. Officials are still working to reopen the roads surrounding the community. Anyone who does not live in the neighborhood is being asked to avoid the area.
