Officer shoots, kills man at Prince George's County apartment building

This is the third deadly shooting involving police across the DMV in eight days.

SUITLAND, Md. β€” Police say an officer shot and killed a man while responding to a report of break-in at an apartment building in Suitland, Thursday evening.

Prince George's County Police Department held a press conference just before 9 p.m. According to police, a patrol officer responded to a 911 call for a reported breaking and entering at the Windham Creek apartment complex on Suitland Road in Suitland, Maryland.

"He entered the location and encountered one male adult suspect. An exchange happened. The officer discharged his weapon striking the adult male one time," said Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz.

WUSA9 asked Chief Aziz for clarity regarding the exchange.

"The exchange was not one of gunfire. It was a verbal exchange that occurred with the people who were in the house. Two people were inside the location. One that he encountered he discharged his weapon and the discourse was fatal," said Chief Aziz.

The Chief told WUSA9 that the officer attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the officer involved was not injured and that a gun was recovered at the scene.

Chief Aziz did not mention if the man's gun was drawn during his "verbal exchange" with the officer. But he did confirm that he did not fire any rounds from his gun.

The identity of the victim and officer is being held for now. No word if the second occupant in the apartment is being questioned by police for details leading up to the officer's arrival.

The Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division will be taking over this investigation.

A spokesperson told WUSA9 that the names of both the officer involved and the man who was killed will be released within two business days. The police body camera footage will be released within 20 business days.

This is the third deadly shooting involving police across the DMV in eight days.

Police continue to investigate a deadly carjacking and shooting rampage in Lanham Hills that ended when officers with New Carrollton Police shot and killed 28-year-old Artell Cunningham on Tuesday.

Last week, DC Police officers shot and killed Clifford Brooks following a call for a mental health crisis.
