Fire that engulfed Mormon church in Maryland causes over $10M in damages

Due to a partial building collapse, firefighters were unable to enter the building.

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — Investigators have determined a fire that engulfed a Mormon church in Maryland on Monday caused over $10 million in damages. Currently, no one is allowed to enter the building due to collapse concerns.

Just before 12:30 p.m. on Monday, a call came in about a fire at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 5460 Western Ave. in Chevy Chase, at the border of Maryland and D.C.

Firefighters with the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service declared a "mayday" at the scene due to an interior collapse, but all firefighters were accounted for, DC Fire and EMS said. Some of the firefighters were briefly trapped, but were rescued quickly and all were uninjured.

Over 100 firefighters from multiple units responded in total to work this fire.

The cause of the fire and its origin are still under investigation.

Church leaders tell WUSA9 they will be holding Sunday service this week at their Eastern Market location.

Investigators report over $10 million in structural damages and $1.5 million in damages to the contents of the building.
