ROCKVILLE, Md. — A Rockville man was sentenced to prison Friday after drunkenly crashing in October, killing 62-year-old Noel Powell.
The crash happened on August 14, 2022, after 22-year-old Kevin Orihuela attended a friend's birthday party at a restaurant in the Pike & Rose Center, according to court documents. Surveillance videos from the restaurant showed the group ordered ‘bottomless mimosas’ and over two hours, Orihuela had 11 mimosas.
Afterward, Orihuela left in his car and sped away, reportedly going as fast as 70 mph in a 40 mph zone. He then crashed at the intersection of Josiah Henson Parkway and the exit ramp from Route 355. Hitting and killing Powell.
When officers arrived and drew his blood alcohol levels were still over the limit at .09, four hours after the crash and long after Powell was pronounced dead.
Orihuela was convicted by a jury in October on charges of Homicide by Motor Vehicle while Under the Influence of Alcohol and Gross Negligent Manslaughter by Motor Vehicle. A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison Friday, with all but four years suspended. He will also be required to serve five years of supervised probation upon release.
