Off-duty DC Police officer was going 95 mph before crash in Alexandria, VSP says

The officer was off duty and driving his personal car when the crash occurred.

VIRGINIA, USA — A Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officer has had his police powers revoked after he was arrested by the Virginia State Police on Thanksgiving.

According to a statement from MPD, Officer Peter McCauley was off-duty and driving his personally owned vehicle during a crash Thursday.

Virginia State Police (VSP) say just minutes before midnight on Wednesday night, a trooper noticed a Tesla going 95 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone on Interstate 395 near the Arlington/Alexandria line.

The state trooper reportedly turned on their lights and attempted to pull the Tesla over. However, VSP says the Tesla sped away and a chase ensued. The Tesla then allegedly exited I-395 at Seminary Road in Alexandria and ran through a red light where it tried to make a left turn and hit a Honda Civic.

VSP reports that the impact of the crash caused the Tesla to run off the road and hit a nearby Jersey wall. The Honda that was hit ran off the road and hit the Jersey wall and a light pole.

McCauley was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, while the 28-year-old woman who was riding in the Tesla with him was treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda, a 22-year-old woman from Suffolk, Virginia, was taken to an area hospital for help. She is expected to survive.

McCauley has been charged with one felony count of eluding police.

The crash and McCauley's arrest are now under investigation by MPD's Internal Affairs Division. McCauley has been with the department since June 2020. His police powers have been revoked and he has been placed on a non-contact status.
