CALIFORNIA, Md. — The Thomas Johnson Bridge in California, Maryland is set to reopen Wednesday night after a serious crash earlier in the day left three people hospitalized and closed the bridge to drivers.
As of 8:30 p.m., officials say the roadway is set to reopen within the hour. Investigators have determined that the crash was not deadly and that it was a head-on collision.
At 3:55 p.m. on Wednesday, the crash was originally reported to the St. Mary County Sheriff's Office. Police say Dewayne Frederick Bailey, 59, of Lexington Park, Maryland, was taken to George Washington University Hospital for treatment after the crash. He was the driver of a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. James Wesley Dehart Jr., 32, of Lusby, Maryland, was also taken to Medstar Washington Hospital Center for treatment after the crash. He was the driver of a 2018 Hyundai Sonata. Both were airlifted by Maryland State Police helicopters.
Investigators say a driver of a third vehicle, a 2015 Dodge Ram, involved in the crash refused medical treatment at the scene. He is 28 years old and from Texas.
The bridge closed for several hours after the crash while officers investigated.
Drivers in the area were told to expect delays.
