Video shows aftermath of police shooting man involved in deadly carjacking rampage

Artell Cunningham, 28, was shot and killed by New Carrollton Police following a crime spree that left two people dead.

WEST LANHAM HILLS, Md. — Authorities have released footage from the body-worn cameras of officers who shot and killed a 28-year-old Maryland man, bringing an end to a deadly crime spree that began in D.C. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General Special Investigations Division released the footage Thursday, nearly a month after the man was shot and killed.

The officers did not activate their body-worn cameras until after the shooting took place. The footage can be seen in its entirety below, but be warned, the video contains graphic imagery. Viewer discretion is advised.

The deadly shooting happened after an hours-long manhunt connected to multiple carjackings across the DMV. New Carrollton police said officers shot Atrell Cunningham, who they believe is responsible for the rampage. Investigators said they are still working on finding a motive and believe he was suffering from a mental health crisis.

The officers were on patrol in the 7500 block of Annapolis Road in New Carrollton when they found an abandoned SUV in the road. The officers searched the area, but did not find anyone. A short time later, investigators say they were approached by Cunningham, who was carrying two guns. The officers both opened fire on the man.

Footage begins with the man believed to be Cunningham on the ground in the parking lot. Corporal Carlos Batenga's camera captures him radioing in, reporting that the man has two guns. He's seen pointing his gun at Cunningham, yelling at him not to move and to put the guns down. As the wounded man is on the ground, he moves slightly. Both officers yell at him not to move, and Batenga kicks both guns away from Cunningham.

Batenga radios for an ambulance while both officers stand and keep their guns trained on Cunningham. When backup arrives, Batenga points out where the two guns ended up after he kicked them.

The footage released Thursday also shows a camera worn by Sergeant Byron Purnell. His footage is very similar to that of Batenga.

Footage from an officer assisting the department shows the officer putting Cunningham in handcuffs and beginning CPR. Officers say Cunningham is still breathing and attempt life-saving measures when the video ends. Cunningham died from his injuries.
