Officers responding to suicidal person call shoot, wound woman

Police say the woman was mentally unstable, and had killed a cat in her home before officers arrived.

PASADENA, Md. — A 61-year-old woman was critically injured after she was shot by Anne Arundel Police Department officers who were responding to a report of a suicidal person. Authorities say when they arrived at the scene in the 8600 block of Gambier Harbor in Pasadena, the learned the woman was armed inside a home there, and had shot and killed a cat inside.

Justin Mulcahy with the Anne Arundel Police Department told media in a press conference that the call came in around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Once on scene, officers set up a perimeter, and the woman, who has not been identified by police, came out of the home. She quickly went back inside, and came out again with a handgun, Mulcahy said.

The officers told the woman to drop the gun, and she did not. Mulcahy said instead, the woman raised the gun toward the officers and the responding officers shot the woman. It is not clear how many officers responded to the scene, or how many officers opened fire on the woman.

The woman was taken to a trauma center in Baltimore in critical condition. Police say a gun was recovered on the scene. The cat was found in the home shot to death. No officers were injured.

"Any time there's a shooting in our community, particularly involving police officers, it's traumatic for everyone involved," said Anne Arundel Police Department Chief Amal Awad said.

The officers who shot the woman have been placed on administrative leave pending a review by the Office of Professional Standards.

Police are still looking to speak to witnesses and gather additional information. Anyone who may have information for investigators is asked to call 410-222-4700.
