3 rescued from 2-alarm house fire in downtown Frederick

About 75 firefighters worked to extinguish the large blaze.

FREDERICK, Md. — Firefighters in Frederick are still trying to figure out what caused a large fire in a vacant home early Tuesday morning. Three people were rescued from the home, according to the Frederick County Fire Department.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the three-story building just before 5 a.m. in the 400 block of East Patrick Street. Dispatchers let firefighters know people may be trapped inside.

Once on scene, crews saw a large amount of smoke pouring from the third floor. A second alarm was called to get more help to the scene. Responding firefighters searched the building, while also working to bring the flames under control.

Firefighters rescued three people from the blaze. One of them was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Two others left the scene without being treated by medical personnel. Firefighters say the people inside the house did not live there, describing them as transients.

According to the fire department, it took 75 firefighters about a half an hour to extinguish the blaze. Crews remained on scene Tuesday morning monitoring hot spots.

A portion of East Patrick Street was closed for several hours for the fire response. The cause of the blaze is now under investigation by the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office.
