Crews respond to 2-alarm fire at Montgomery Village apartment complex

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE, Md. — Firefighters worked quickly to bring a two-alarm fire at a Montgomery Village apartment complex under control Thursday morning. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Montgomery County fire crews were called to the Cider Mill Apartments in the 18200 block of Lost Knife Circle for a report of a fire just before 6 a.m. When crews arrived at the garden style apartment complex, they found flames shooting from the top floor of a building there. A second alarm was called, which brought roughly 75 firefighters to the scene.

According to a spokesperson from the department, the fire was extinguished around 6:15 a.m. No injuries were reported. Firefighters don't know how many residents have been displaced by the blaze, but the spokesperson said it is clear they will not be able to return to the building.

It is not clear whether the apartment had working smoke alarms or sprinklers. WUSA9 reached out to the department for clarity.

"Regarding sprinklers, it is unclear whether the building has them, but based on its age, it is likely that it does not," the spokesperson said.

This is the second two-alarm fire at an apartment building in Montgomery County in roughly 24 hours. On Wednesday, crews extinguished a blaze in a high-rise apartment building in Bethesda. That building also did not have a sprinkler system.
