WASHINGTON — Firefighters rescued two cats from a burning apartment building in Northwest D.C. on Wednesday morning.
DC Fire and EMS responded to a three-story apartment on 11th Street after receiving reports of a fire. Upon arrival, crews saw flames and heavy smoke pouring from the first floor. The fire quickly spread, engulfing the second and third floors as well as the attic, and impacting a neighboring home.

At this time, the extent of the damage and the number of displaced residents remain unclear, and investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
For those living in apartments, fire safety is crucial. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Ensure smoke alarms are installed and working on every level of your home.
- Create an escape plan, including multiple exit routes, and practice it regularly.
- Keep exits clear of clutter and make sure windows and doors can be easily opened.
- Never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable items away from heat sources.
