QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, Md. — A teenager is in the hospital recovering from burns and other injuries he got from a homemade gun exploding.

On Thursday, just before 11 p.m. fire and EMS responded to Laysan Teal Court in Church Hill for reports of traumatic injuries. When they arrived they found a 13-year-old boy suffering from burns. The teen was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

A preliminary investigation revealed the teen attempted to shoot a makeshift gun made from a metal pipe filled with black powder. The teen attempted to light the homemade device with a lighter and it exploded sending the teen to the hospital.

Police do not believe the device was made for criminal reasons, therefore there is no threat to the public.

The teen's last updated condition was stable as of Friday night.
