WHEATON-GLENMONT, Md. — Police say a driver fleeing a traffic stop caused a three-vehicle crash in Wheaton that left one person dead. Four others were hurt in the collision
Investigators say the crash was first reported around 10:15 p.m. on northbound Georgia Avenue at Weisman Road. According to Montgomery County Police, officers were trying to stop a driver after they struck a marked police cruiser and took off from a traffic stop. The driver, in a white Nissan Maxima, crashed into a Toyota Corolla, and then struck a Honda Pilot at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Henderson Avenue.
The driver was taken into custody after the crash. It is not clear what charges they are facing. Another person, who was a passenger in the Maxima, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
Pete Piringer, a spokesperson with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said four others were hospitalized in the crash. Their current conditions are not known.
Georgia Avenue was closed in both directions for several hours for the crash investigation.
Per Maryland law, the investigation into this collision has been handed over to the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division.
