COLUMBIA, Md. — A teenager is dead and two others were taken to an area hospital after a house fire in Columbia, Maryland on Wednesday.
At 7:30 p.m., firefighters were alerted to the 11500 block of Shell Flower Lane in Columbia for a townhouse fire with a victim trapped inside. At the scene, crews reported seeing fire coming from the second floor of the home.
Firefighters searched the structure. During their search, crews came across someone dead inside the home. Police say the victim has been identified as 15-year-old Katie Chase.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control within about 20 minutes after arriving on scene. Two other people were taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.
The Red Cross has been requested to help the home's residents.
Investigators have determined the cause of the fire was accidental.
