Hourslong hazmat investigation in Herndon ends, evacuated residents allowed to return home

The execution of a search warrant led to an hourslong hazmat investigation in Virginia on Friday.

HERNDON, Va. — Dozens of Herndon residents who were evacuated early Friday during a hazmat investigation have now been allowed to return to their homes. Police say the suspicious chemicals that triggered the investigation were not a danger to the community.

About 20 homes were evacuated in the 200 block of Herndon Station Square after police say they discovered suspicious chemical substances and other evidence of concern inside the home of a man who was arrested Friday morning. Police did not specify what type of chemicals were found.

The Herndon Police Department, ATF Washington and the Fairfax County Police Department were on scene to recover evidence from the home of 44-year-old Timothy Kyle. Kyle is reportedly wanted in Pennsylvania on charges of criminal mischief, stalking, and three counts of harassment. He was taken into custody without incident at about 11:30 a.m., after which detectives executed a search warrant on his home.

The neighboring houses were evacuated out of precaution, police say, and the W&OD Trail was closed between Grace and Center as well. The Harbor House Senior Center was also evacuated for safety reasons.

Kyle remains in custody awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania. At this moment, no charges have been filed against him in connection with the hazmat investigation in Virginia.
