WASHINGTON — Hundreds of people have come together to help raise money for the family of a woman who died after being hit by a car on Interstate 495 last weekend.

According to Virginia State Police, Vanessa V. Schwartz was hit and killed shortly before 4 a.m. on Sunday.

A preliminary investigation shows that a 2005 Honda Accord heading eastbound in the right center lane was unable to avoid hitting Schwartz.

Witnesses told police that the 35-year-old "stumbled" into traffic and was hit by a car. She died at the scene. It is unclear why Schwartz was on the Beltway.

A GoFundMe was started to help the Schwartz family. As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, the GoFundMe has raised more than $35,000.

"Vanessa was a beautiful young woman who lived her life completely dedicated to her 8-month old daughter Luciana (Lucy), her husband Michael, and her two parents Luisa and Jose," the GoFundMe reads.
