WASHINGTON — Don't be alarmed if Rock Creek looks a little more green than usual Friday.
DC Water has introduced non-toxic, biodegradable green dye into the waterway to locate and observe the outfalls along the creek, causing the water to temporarily turn green.
Friday's dying of the water is part of an ongoing project aimed at restoring 11 outfalls and stream sites throughout Rock Creek Park. Officials say the many drainage points from the roads in the park are causing severe erosion, which is harming water quality downstream.
The project aims to stabilize and restore eroded outfall gullies and streams. This will help slow and filter stormwater during rain, restore natural water flow, prevent erosion, reduce pollution, and improve wildlife habitat. It will also repair, restore, or replace the existing stormwater outfalls to ensure their long-term stability.
