Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

WASHINGTON — Firefighters are investigating what caused an apartment fire in Southeast, D.C. Monday night. The blaze, which broke out at an apartment building in the 3400 block of Stanton Road in Southeast, displaced a total of seven people, including five children.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 7 p.m. Once on scene, crews saw flames coming from the first-floor apartment of a three-story building. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control before it spread to any other apartments.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the people displaced by the blaze.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. D.C. Fire crews did not provide an estimate for damage to the apartment. It is not known if the apartment had working smoke alarms.
